Twombly and Poussin: Arcadian Painters
A unique exploration of contemporary artist Cy Twombly (April 25, 1928 - 5 July, 2011) and 17th century classical painter Nicolas Poussin (1594 -1665). This exhibition looked at these two figures side by side for the first time.

A wonderful setting for seeing and being seen. Late night openings at Dulwich are always impressive. Just being in the galleries after dark makes you feel special. Standing at the edge and watching the people was as fascinating for me as looking at the art on the walls. Spotting people, spotting celebrity actors (there were several household names in the house) was most fun of all.
I love the Dulwich Picture Gallery, I’d happily go there to see any exhibition, whether I liked the artist or not. In this case I do not. I’m not a fan of Poussin or Twombly so you won’t be surprised to hear that I didn’t much enjoy the exhibition.
I do find it very hard to comment on the art, other than it was beautifully presented and thoughtfully hung. And I’m sure the 16mm film was great although the noise of the projector (and the sound of a full gallery) drowned out the soundtrack so I couldn’t really follow any of it.
We had a lovely time, the choir was fun, the setting was great, but the art was a bit too artsy for me.
