Winning Words

Forward Arts Foundation approached us with an exciting challenge: create a visual framework that can encompass a year-long project about something as intangible as poetry.

A flexible website was key to our solution. Built on a WordPress framework, the site is content-rich and very easy to update in many different ways. The home page is created from content drawn from throughout the site, so any messages, news or articles can be used as instant navigation. Facebook and Twitter feeds are drawn onto the page, giving the team the opportunity to run competitions and give live updates from events.

The site is built to be completely 'responsive' so it adapts to suit any browser device: smartphones, tablet computers and any desktop environment. The content and layout reshape and resize to suit, as the screen size is expanded or contracted.

To ensure the website would be visually consistent with any printed materials, we also designed a full visual identity for the project, including the logo, typestyling and colour palette.

The site launched on National Poetry Day, 6th October 2011. The project will run until the same date in 2012, with key activity during the run-up to the Olympics, on the park and across all of the other venues.

One of my favourite elements of the site is the 'poem of the day'. A new poem is drawn onto the home page each day, an inspiring  thought or the spark of an idea. It's all generated from a large and well indexed poetry database on the site; a simple idea and a great resource.

I'm particularly pleased with this simple logo. It captures the essence of the project: taking potery off the page. It also has a sculptural feel that will become increasingly important, as installations of potery in the built environment are unveiled in the Olympic park and beyond. It works well on a light grey background and really sings out of the colour-coded areas of the website.

We've also designed the logo to be animated, to apear on video-stings, trailers and bumpers, between on-screen presentations and recited poetry.
