Gary Hustwit’s film caused a real stir amongst designers. We visited the ICA for a special screening of Helvetica, a film about the world’s ubiquitous typeface.
Helvetica at ICA
This isn’t the kind of film that you’d see on general release at the Cineplex. So we travelled up to The Mall to watch it in a small viewing room at the ICA, packed with overly earnest designers and typographers.
Equally enlightening and frustrating, celebrity designers talked about their loving or loathing of Helvetica, inter-cut with spotted uses, across the globe. A fascinating documentary, even if the protagonists were infuriatingly smug.
Helvetica has spawned a mini-industry of films and merch. Check out Gary’s website to see all of the latest releases.
